I woke up at around 3.30am to make sure I had all of my camera equipment ready and headed out to Tallebudgera Creek for a maternity shoot with Faye and Neil. Although it feels like a challenge to wake up that early, I love shooting at sunrise. A lot of clients will want to have their photoshoot at sunset, which is fair enough, it’s a beautiful light and an easier time of day. However, there is something truly special about being up when most other people are still tucked away in bed, and watching that beautiful sun come up over the horizon, I really do count myself lucky to live here on the Gold Coast and being a photographer allows me to experience these things often.
I met Faye and Neil at Tallebudgera Creek at 4.15am and we walked down to the water and got set up. Speaking with Faye prior to the photoshoot, we had agreed on three different outfits she would wear, I like when we can incorporate different clothing as it gives more variety and we can get different looks for each spot we shoot at.
It was still quite dark at this point and the first light was just seeping through, so I started shooting utilising my speedlites. I could tell straight away this was going to be an epic sunrise, the purples in the sky were just starting to show through. I photographed both Faye and Neil up the end by the rocks and in the shallows of the water, which was a little colder than expected on this summer morning. The sunrise was in full force now and coming up over the rockwall so we moved and snapped some beautiful silhouettes.
After this we changed outfits, Faye and Neil are very much beach kind of people, so I wanted to show this side of them in their shoot, and besides we were photographing at the beach after all. Faye hopped into her bikini and we continued photographing while that stunning sunrise was still filling the sky with those vibrant and gorgeous hues.
By now the colour in the sky had dwindled and the sun was up. We got Faye changed into one last outfit and ended the photography session up at the carpark where the old Greek restaurant is. There are great little areas at the front of this place that will give something a little extra to the beach photos. I like adding variety to my locations and can usually find plenty in one area. It was a great morning photographing this maternity shoot here on the Gold Coast and we couldn’t have gotten much luckier with that sunrise. Keep an eye out for the upcoming blog when baby Tahli has arrived in their Newborn Photoshoot.
